I finally managed to read this book, after it had been on my to be read list for a long times already. It has been on the market for some time already so I will keep it very short and simple: Read this book!
The story in itself is the coming of age story of Star, a young black girl living in America. The reader follows her struggle to come to terms with her own identity. But that’s not the main point of the book. For me the main focus is on how the world treats minorities. Yes, it is not only about how people of colour are treated in the USA, it is about how everyone is treating people that do not perfectly fit into the „western“ norm. So it is not only young adult fiction but it is for people of all ages. I am really looking forward to reading this book with my pupils this year and hope they will enjoy it as much as I did.
I listende to the audiobook version read by Bahni Turpin, who really made the characters come to life and managed to give them all different voices.
